At the 2024 Grammys, Tyla, who hails from Johannesburg, was announced as the winner of the first-ever Grammy for Best African Music Performance without much suspense.
The competition included other talented artists like ASAKE & Olamide, Burna Boy, Davido featuring Musa Keys, and Ayra Starr. Tyla’s track “Water” recently made it to the seventh spot on Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Expressing her astonishment at winning the award at just 22 years old, Tyla stated, “I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22 years old. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category. It’s so important.”
Best African Music Performance was a new category at the 2024 Grammys, alongside Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording. Kylie Minogue, the Australian pop sensation, secured the latter award for her song “Padam Padam.”
You can catch the live broadcast of the 2024 Grammy Awards on CBS Television Network and stream it on Paramount+ at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
