The Designer: Fabryan
Pride talks to founder Samantha Jane Agbontaen.
Why did you become a designer? My mother was a dress designer, and I used to sew scraps of fabric for my dolls. Even though I didn’t study fashion and had no formal training, I wanted to pursue a career in design to express my creativity more personally.
What is the inspiration behind the SS14 collection? The Enchanted Gardens collection was inspired by the exotic flowers at Kew Gardens. I created the print from Chinese roses and bird of paradise flowers, with my love of nature at the core of the collection.
Do you think it’s harder for black designers to succeed? I don’t believe race plays a role in success. The fashion industry is extremely competitive and challenging for everyone. I think relentless hard work and determination are key factors for success.
What is the biggest highlight for the label? I had the opportunity to collaborate with Chopard for a Swiss magazine – their diamonds were amazing. However, I believe the best is yet to come!
What are your plans for the label in the future? My goal is for Fabryan to continue to grow as a brand with each collection, both in the UK and globally.
The ‘IT’ bag:
Zatchels
The revival of pastel colors all over the high street is best described as sugar and spice and everything nice. If head-to-toe pastel is a little too much, then these pastel leather backpacks, totes, and micro satchels from Zatchels might be just what you’re looking for!
