In this year’s Grammy nominations, the Black Pumas from Austin have been nominated for Best Rock Performance for their song “More Than a Love Song.”
Competing with other bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Metallica, and boygenius in the 66th annual Grammy Awards, this marks the third consecutive year the band has been nominated in a major Grammy category. In 2021, their album “Colors” earned them a nomination for Record of the Year, but they lost to Lizzo’s “About Damm Time.”
The band initially performed at the South Congress club C-Boys in 2018 and received early recognition from the American-Statesman music writer, Deborah Sengupta Stith.

The nominated song is part of their recently released second album “Chronicles of a Diamond,” which has received widespread acclaim. Quesada and Burton were interviewed by Sengupta Stith in the weeks leading up to the album’s release.
Sengupta Stith writes, “‘Chronicles of a Diamond’ by Black Pumas will go down in history as one of the defining soul albums of our generation. This is not hyperbole or hometown bias. The album is an obvious Grammy contender for the Austin group who picked up seven nominations for their 2019 self-titled debut (and the deluxe re-release). But beyond that, the 10-track collection contains timeless gems that feel destined to adorn the fabric of American life for years to come.”
