Darell Preston, the owner of LoRell’s Chicken Shack, was assaulted almost seven months ago by a 40-year-old white man, leaving him with a broken nose and fractured face. Justice is now being served for him.
The perpetrator, Daniel Thomas Warren, has recently pleaded guilty to assault in the third degree and no contest to a bias crime in the first degree. Despite this, he refuses to acknowledge the racial motivation behind the attack, even though witnesses heard him using derogatory slurs, including the N-word.
Last July, Warren ambushed Preston while making deliveries, inflicting unprovoked kicks and punches along with racial epithets. Video evidence caught Warren walking away from the scene and even stomping on Preston once more before being arrested by the police days later.
Community members came together to support Preston’s recovery through a GoFundMe campaign, raising over $89,000. As Preston returns to work and focuses on recuperation, the upcoming sentencing of Warren on Feb. 21 brings a sense of closure and accountability after this disturbing incident.
