The novel is the first one I’ve read from Zelda Lockhart, and I am eager to explore more of her writing. The story is packed with drama and is a real page-turner as it portrays the curse that has affected three generations of a family. It serves as a stark reminder of the injustices suffered by black and brown individuals. Even after serving their country, they faced belittlement and unequal treatment.
The lingering spirits of family members who were killed remained in the house, tormenting and attempting to harm the next living family member. Beginning with Bennie and Lenard, the souls of their mother, murdered by their abusive father, were not at peace and continued to haunt the family home.
During that era, there was little discourse about therapy for the mentally ill or disturbed individuals, and past wounds were left unhealed. Despite the brothers’ attempts to overcome the legacy of their father, Bennie succumbed to the internal demons.
