At the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 17, Malia Obama presented the trailer for her debut directorial project, “The Heart.” The film, which follows a young man fulfilling his mother’s final wish amid his grief, also marks Malia’s debut as a director and screenwriter. It features a predominantly Black cast and is set for full screening at the festival, where it will compete in the U.S. fiction short films category.
Describing her creation during the trailer’s showcase, Malia expressed that “The Heart” explores themes of lost objects, lonely people, forgiveness, and regret, while also uncovering tenderness and closeness within these elements.
For her cinematic premiere at Sundance, the 25-year-old wore a grey coat, a thin wool scarf, and brown combat boots, accentuated by her distinctive wine-colored goddess braids.
