Accra, Ghana, has officially become Chattanooga’s seventh sister city, marking the first African location to have a special diplomatic status with the US city.
“Our other sister city relationships have enriched our community, grown our economy and broadened our cultural horizons,” said Mayor Tim Kelly in a news release about the newly established relationship.
“It’s overdue that we establish one of these connections on the African continent, and I can think of no better partner than Accra. Many Chattanooga residents have West African roots, and we look forward to robust partnerships and cultural exchange, especially for our youth.”
The two cities have been working on formalizing the relationship for over a year, and the announcement comes at a timely moment as Accra was featured in a Super Bowl commercial, showcasing the growing popularity of the sport globally.
A formal signing ceremony between the two cities is scheduled to take place virtually in February.
