HIP-HOP AGAINST GUN & GANG VIOLENCE WEEK
The annual Hip-Hop Against Gun & Gang Violence Week is a notable event, with this year’s celebration from May 15-21, 2015. Power 105.1 played a key role in making it a success. The event received a powerful inspirational Presidential Message from Barack Obama as a recognition of the tireless work done by the HHSYC over the years to end gun and gang violence in disadvantaged communities. The organization now uses this message as a “Call To Action” for young citizens to join the “Raptivism Movement” to combat gun and gang violence.
“Having been involved in community service for 37 years and working with major social service and civil rights groups, including assisting former President Bill Clinton in launching AmeriCorps, I have a good understanding of giving back. When I met Power 105.1 Music Director Gee Spin at the 2013 Powerhouse Concert, I was introduced by my friend Brad Patrick. Gee expressed the station’s desire to address gun and gang violence and introduced me to his boss Thea Mitchem, and from there, a plan of action was laid out. Despite previous propositions that went nowhere, this time felt different, and thanks to Power 105.1, we have saved many lives over the past several years and showcased the positive social side of Hip-Hop Culture, which was created to address poor community conditions through art,” stated Charles Fisher, Founder, HHSYC.
Randy Fisher, Executive Director, HHSYC stated, “The 105-day campaign we conducted in 2014 and 2015 showed a level of social responsibility never displayed by a Fortune 500 Company regarding gun and gang violence and I’m excited about the endless opportunities we now have to use Hip-Hop as a legitimate platform to end the violence as well as address a host of other social issues that affect the quality of life in poor crime-infested communities. Over the last 14 years we forged relationships with a host of companies including Walmart, Coca-Cola, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Viacom and many other Fortune 500 companies, but none have shown a real long term commitment to stop the senseless killings that continue to affect children and families in America. 86 people (8 children and teens) die daily from gun murders and it’s time for companies to step up their game like the executives at Power 105.1 and become more proactive about the problem because the problem is only going to get worse.”
