A grieving mother is searching for answers after a fatal shooting in Cleveland left both of her children dead. Police say Mariana Grier, 21, and Antwon Grier, 20, were shot following an altercation between the daughter and a separate group of women.
LaShawnda Grier was reportedly at the scene when her children were killed on Dec. 10. “All of us fell at the same time. I got up. My oldest daughter got up and ran up the hill, and I ran down the hill,” she recalled to WOIO. “I saw my son underneath the car… and I picked him up, and he was so slumped,” said the mother continued.
According to police, “gunfire erupted within the crowd” outside of an apartment complex. Surveillance footage obtained by WEWS shows the moments leading to the deadly shooting. Four women reportedly jumped out of a blue van and began arguing with Mariana.
That’s when LaShawnda says Antwon jumped in and tried to deescalate the situation, but soon, everything turned fatal when an unidentified assailant pulled out a gun. “As a mother, how do you pick which kid you are trying to save and both of them down?” LaShawnda asked.
The mother said she performed CPR on her son before both of her children were rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead.
“They came there to ambush my kids,” LaShawnda told WOIO. A formal investigation into the cause of the altercation is still underway, but according to LaShawnda, the fight was allegedly “all over a boy.”
The Euclid Police Department, who is in charge of the investigation, reports it has “developed strong leads.” No arrests have been reportedly made.
Now, the grieving mother is seeking justice. She said “They know I don’t play about my kids.” LaShawnda continued saying “If it’s every breath that’s in my body, I’ma get it.”
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs.
