Former President Barack Obama was fed up earlier this week with the Trump stimulus check rhetoric. Throughout the election season, some voters have come forward proclaiming their enthusiasm for a Trump presidency because of the stimulus checks given to citizens during the pandemic.
But Obama insisted Trump wasn’t the only one giving out check during dire times, he was just tacky enough to put his name on it.
“Joe Biden sent you a check during the pandemic. Just like I gave people relief during the Great Recession. The thing is ,we didn’t put our name on it because it wasn’t about feeding our egos,” Obama said at a campaign rally for Kamala Harris in Georgia this week.
There was additional commotion about whether or not Trump adding his name to the stimulus was legal.
Although there was a lot of push back from Democrats behind this, it was perfectly legal because Trump’s name was above “Economic Impact Payment” in the memo line, according to a report from Bloomberg. The IRS and the Treasury Office of the General Counsel all agreed that this was legal.
However, it was the first time a president’s name appeared on an IRS expenditure.
Regardless, former CNN News Anchor, Don Lemon says the talking point has been seemingly echoed by Black men for their support for Trump. But, it is not exactly true that Trump willingly granted out just because.
“No, Trump did NOT give you a stimulus check,” Former CNN News Anchor Don Lemon explained in a video on X.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) was responsible for dispersing the amount each person would receive based on Income, tax filing status and the number of children in the household.
It was GOP members that blocked the federal aid.
However, Trump was in favor of the $2,000 aid, he wanted to ensure that his name was on every check even if it delayed them.
“Trump didn’t ‘give’ anybody anything. Congress passed a bill for people to get stimulus checks. Then he held up people’s money for days/weeks because he wanted the physical checks to have his signature,” a user said on X.
The point that Obama was stating is that Trump is not the only American President to provide financial assistance.
Even President Joe Biden passed a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus package shortly after taking office.
Obama wants some Americans to release themselves of the hypnosis that a Trump economy would be better for everyone.
When in reality, economists themselves have said inflation would be worse under a Trump Presidency over Harris.
