A new book, “The Black Love Revolutionary’s Handbook: Radical Acts of Healing, Resistance and Celebration” offers a unique perspective on relationships by exploring historical trauma and healing.
The author, Aswad Aarif, is an Oakland native with over 25 years of experience addressing social justice and community wellness issues.
In 2012, Aswad and his wife, Danyelle Aarif, started holding Black Love Healing Circles in their home to create a space for the restoration and celebration of the Black community.
Through facilitating diverse group conversations, they discovered that society often holds a prevailing belief that Black relationships are frequently broken, dysfunctional, and unstable, disregarding the significant impact of trauma on these relationships.
The author realized that many Black individuals expressed the need for better models for their interpersonal relationships due to the lack of positive and healthy representations of Black relationships in the media, the historical and ongoing legacy of racism and discrimination, and how racism intersects with other forms of oppression.
Aarif recognized the immense strengths and knowledge within Black communities and individuals and observed a strong desire among Black people to cultivate healthy and loving relationships.
This book celebrates the resilience of the Black community and the wisdom of Afrocentric traditions.
Starting with a historical perspective of Black relationships and families and extending into modern relationships, the full-color, 300-plus-page book combines practical information and advice with powerful images and quotes about Black love.
The result is a book that aims to help readers better understand themselves and others, utilizing behavioral science and cultural traditions to enhance their connections.
Despite the challenges facing Black families and couples today, maintaining healthy relationships can be difficult. However, by establishing a foundation of respect, equality, joy, and wellness, they can make love a healing resource in their lives.
Aarif aims for his book to inspire and empower Black people to build and sustain the relationships they deserve. He is also the author of several other books, including “Maybe I’m Happy: An Emotional Literacy Book for Kids,” “100 Conversations About Antiracism,” “Freedom Day: A Children’s Book About Juneteenth,” and more.
