Idris Elba, a well-known actor, is at the forefront of developing a smart city in Sierra Leone with the goal of challenging stereotypes about Africa.
Collaborating with Siaka Stevens, the grandson of the country’s former president, they are building an eco-city on Sherbro Island, situated off the coast of West Africa.
Octopus Energy Generation, a renewable energy company, is also partnering with them to establish a wind and solar farm on the island to supply electricity to the residents. Currently, less than a third of households in Sierra Leone have access to electricity.
Speaking to the BBC Newsday program, Elba mentioned, “Are we ever gonna make a profit? I don’t think so, but it is about being self-reliant, bringing an economy that sustains itself and has growth potential.”
Elba aims to change the perception of Africa, stating, “I’m very keen to reframe the way Africa is viewed. We often see Africa through an aid model, but this opportunity is entirely different.”
Elba mentioned to Newsday that the city aims to attract businesses, foster innovation, cater to tourists, and empower local communities.
The actor plans to establish a film studio and a retirement home for his mother within the city.
Elba’s mother, originally from Ghana and residing in the UK, and his late father, hailing from Sierra Leonean descent.
